Maya Devi Temple is one of the most ancient temples of Haridwar. It is believed to be as old as the 11th century, and is also one of the most popular tourist places that you should visit during the Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2021. Maya Devi Temple is also the Adhisthatri deity of Haridwar. In ancient times, Haridwar was called Mayapuri, and Mayapuri was named after Goddess Maya.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Maya, a divine incarnation of Shakti. Mythology legend tells of the story of Sati who immolated herself in the yagna fire of Daksh Prajapati. Shiva then took her body and when he was on his celestial path, the heart and navel of Sati fell at the spot where Maya Devi Temple is located. Maya Devi Temple is therefore considered a Shakti Peeth, and one of the three Siddha Peeth of Haridwar, together with Mansa Devi Temple and Chandi Devi Temple of Haridwar. It is believed that whoever prays at Maya Devi Temple is granted their wish.
Inside the temple, there are three idols i.e. those of Goddess Maya in the centre, Kali on the left, and Kamakhya to the right. Two other idols are also there, and they too are divine forms of Shakti. The temple is easily accessible by auto rickshaw from Har ki Pauri. Navratri and Haridwar Kumbh Mela 2021 are the best times to come here, so that you too can witness the immense spiritual energy of this place and come to know of the glory of Maya Devi Temple.
